More Nauvoo

Well I just can't seem to fit everything into one blog but then again Nauvoo is so wonderful that it should get it's own post or two.  After the temple session we changed our clothes and went down in the "flats" (another term I learned.)  We visited the Visitors Center and picked up our tickets for the play the Senior Missionaries do (really you should see it!), the horse and buggy ride and the Wagon ride.

In the Visitors Center
He lives!!

My Prophet, Priest and Kind

He lives!

My Savior still the same!  HE LIVES!!

"So it was with me. I had actually seen a light, and in the midst of that light I saw two Personages, and they did in reality speak to me; and though I was hated and persecuted for saying that I had seen a vision, yet it was true; and while they were persecuting me, reviling me, and speaking all manner of evil against me falsely for so saying, I was led to say in my heart: Why persecute me for telling the truth? I have actually seen a vision; and who am I that I can withstand God, or why does the world think to make me deny what I have actually seen? For I had seen a vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it; at least I knew that by so doing I would offend God, and come under condemnation."  Joseph Smith Jr.

Alyse and Rocky and Dan.  Getting ready to pull us along to new understand and knowledge

This is the hill that when life got heavy for Joseph he would ride his horse up to this hill and look out over the Mississippi.  The photo below is what he would look out on.  Below is where those coming into town via riverboat would land.  He would go down and meet those who were getting off.   There is a sense of peace on this hill.

The Road of Tears or renamed the Road of Hope.  This is the road that saints took as they left Nauvoo for the last time.  If you look hard you can see the temple in the distance.  Oh my how their hearts must have burst with sorrow.

This is one of the original tunnels built by the pioneers that helped drain the water from the land.

I was told this is where Joseph took Emma and gave her a kiss.

I have some ancestors who lived in Nauvoo.  The Washburn's were their name.  Before the family left Nauvoo two if their children died.  One 6 month and one 2 years old.  This headstone is where these two babies were buried.  My brother found them and has since dubbed them "The Kids."  He asked me if we had been to see the Kids yet and I told him no.  He drove us up here and we walked to the cemetery where I am sure a family whose hearts were filled with sorrow laid their babes to rest and knew they would never be back.  I am sure that  the Washburn's never imagined their posterity would come to the graves of their children and lay flowers!

Nauvoo Temple

Sunday Alyse and I spent some time at the temple walking around taking pictures of the temple and talking to some missionary couples.  It was great to be back in Nauvoo.  Alyse and I found out that the temple was open on Monday.  What a treat!  We were thrilled when we found that out.  We also found there was only 2 sessions.  9:00 and 11:00.  Our goal was to hit the 9:00 session and we did!  We were told to get over to the Visitors Center as early as possible to get tickets for the play and rides.  We found out after getting up early and going that they didn't open until 9:00 so we drive up to the temple.  I love to be in the temple with my children.  It is truly a peek into heaven.  As we drove into Nauvoo and saw the temple it brought me back to those ancestors/saints who worked so hard to make Nauvoo and the temple such a wonderful place.

So one of the things I learned that I did not know is that each of the Sunstones were carved by a different stonemasons.  While they generally all have the same look they are a bit different in subtle ways.   Many people have asked if there is a meaning to the sun, moon and stars on some of the temples.  I have always been told they represent Celestial glories...
1 Corinthians 15:41
There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

A replication of the earlier Sunstones

I walked all round the temple looking at the different symbols.  I came across this interesting article.  While I don't know it if it's true it rings with some familiarity.  (https://www.sunstonemagazine.com/pdf/123-26-27.pdf)

The temple mainly depicted symbols of heaven, signifying God’s divine presence in our midst. The importance of the sun, moon, and star in Mormon theology is seen in the placement and design of the sunstone, moonstone, and starstone. The sun and moon are linked together as implied pillars of the temple, while the stars reside above on a frieze around the entablature or in rows on the tower, like narrow strips of night sky.
Joseph equated the sun, moon, and stars to the three degrees of heavenly glory. Yet he also equated sun and moon to the masculine and feminine. “General Law asked why the sun was called by a masculine name and the moon by a feminine one. I replied that the root of masculine is stronger, and of the feminine weaker. The sun is a governing planet to certain planets, while the moon borrows her light from the sun.”

The sunstone had an animated face brooding over clouds or waves, uniting fire and water. The prominence and elaborate nature of the sunstone makes the moonstone pale by comparison, like a silent partner. Yet
the moonstone provided a foundational base.

The moonstone was simple and serene because a pedestal is usually plain. The placement of a crescent moon onto the temple pedestal was an inventive use of space; it fit into place by laying flat, horizontal or prone, face down. The moon’s face is only a faint outline with smiling lips, nose, and eye. Yet elsewhere (such as the skylight of the celestial room) the moon is depicted in all its phases, signifying completion.

The star is inanimate and appears in various ways: as a three-dimensional starstone, a carved relief, and a stained-glass pentagram. This symbol of the “morning star” points down to the sun. The five-pointed star and
the pentagram, either inverted or upright, were common architectural decorations in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as well as symbols of truth, freedom, or power."

City Beautiful- Nauvoo Flowers

I will blog about Nauvoo alone and the amazing things we saw.  It would be too hard  to do otherwise and I would leave out something wonderful.  Alyse and I spent part of Sunday/ Monday and part of Tuesday there.  What a great time we had!  I learned things I never knew about.  I saw things I haven't ever seen.  I loved Nauvoo like I have never loved before. Nauvoo was surrounded by amazing flowers everywhere.  Here is just a small sampling of what we saw.
I fell in love with these flowers.  Pink and white angel trumpet flowers
This was along the Temple gate.

This speaks for itself!

Whenever I see these flowers I am taken back home to when my mom had them in pink, red and white!!

White angel trumpet flowers

Doesn't it just seem perfect to have white angel trumpet flowers in Nauvoo?

Road trip with Alyse

So onto some more of our road trip. We had hoped we would get a break in the weather and start to experience some lower temps. But that didn't happen too quickly. But none the less we enjoyed the parts of the world we had seen and were yet to see. We left Paducha Kentucky on Sunday and were driving into Nauvoo that day. It was going to be a pretty easy drive. As we drove towards St. Louis the scenery changed and we were driving now with rock walls on both sides of the highway. The interesting thing about these rock walls were the pine trees that were growing out of the rocks. Well probably the cracks but it was interesting to see non the less. I tried to get Alyse to take a picture but they were gone before we could snap one or two. But I liked them. We drove through St. Louis and I never got a good picture of the Arch.

The kids and I went there a few years back and Alyse said she was okay not seeing it again. The traffic was horrible and we saw 4 or 5 major accidents with in a 10 mins period. Needless to say I was happy to get out of St. Louis. But I will say St. Louis has come very pretty rod iron work that frames the bridges. I know weird. Now most people would take off and head north but we go a little more west into Missouri and drive up along side the state line up to Nauvoo. It is beautiful to look at. It was about this time that I decided that I have a infatuation with barns.  I found myself wanting to stop and take pictures.  But alas I didn't.  But there are some way cool barns between Tallahassee and Iowa!  I would love to have an old barn on our property but I don't think we would get a permit for one.  :-(

So on we drove.  Since we took that back way it would lead us into Hannibal.  Now we all know Hannibal is famous for Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher and of course Mark Twain.

And of course the mighty Mississippi River.

Our next stop is Nauvoo Ill.

Vacation and Fun

Alyse and I ventured out for a weeks worth of play and headed towards Nauvoo and Iowa. Nauvoo for obvious reasons and Iowa to see Bruce and Midge. We had such a good time. We left Friday the 17th and headed up to Atlanta. Atlanta isn't that far of a drive but we didn't leave until almost noon. After a short stop to the grocery store to stock up on things to eat we were off.

One of Mike's favorite places to visit is Stripling's for their homemade beef jerky. I purchased 2 bags for him. They rode in the back seat our whole trip. We then made a beeline to Atlanta. We just so happen to find the need to stop at the outlet mall just a few miles from our hotel.  We had to check out those stores.  We found some great bargains and left happy campers.   But we had a two other things on our list to do list. Check out the temple (it's under construction but Alyse hadn't ever seen it before)and go to the Underground. Well the last proved to be a bad idea. We spent less then 15 mins there after we determined this wasn't for us. We first drove to the temple and this use to be our temple district before the Orlando temple was built.   We were able to snap some cool pictures of the temple.  The sun was just right.  This was surely a sign of great things to come.

We went back to the hotel room and prepared for the next day's drive that would take us to Paducah Kentucky.

The Olympic Torch
Downtown Atlanta

While still in Georgia we came across another outlet mall  Just had to stop to see what great finds they had.  We found birthday gifts for two people in our family.   We also saw some amazing scenery while driving.

Tennessee soon welcomed us.  We stopped in Chattanooga on our way to Paducah.  We stopped by Ruby Falls and Lookout Mountain.  The leaves were turning the brilliant yellows, reds and oranges.

 Chattanooga from Lookout Mountain
After spending time on Lookout Mountain we left wonderful Chattanooga and headed on to Paducah Kentucky.  2 days into our trip and seeing amazing things!  Stay tuned for more adventures!

Time marches on!

So it has been a few months since I posted on my blog.
Kristen got engaged and is now married. Michelle received a new kidney and has been having a few issues but things are looking up. Robby and Brittany have come and gone home and are now on a cruise. Alyse's life is about ready to take off in a direction she never imagined. She has even experienced kidney stones as well. Mike is still going out to Ca. My sister Kathy officially went into remission from the cancer that has plagued her for over 3 or 4 years. I don't have a job anymore but is that really a bad thing? I couldn't have worked and done a wedding in 9 weeks. I have a job offer that should start in about 4 weeks. I have 2 applications still out so we shall see. Trent moved in with us and soon brought his cute little family with him. We were also blessed to have Marcia, Max and Cynthia come out for the wedding as well as Mike's mom. I learned that my parents house is being sold for the 2nd time and someone has completely over hall it! It doesn't look anything like it did when we left it. Who does that? Okay I know lots of people do!

So things have been a little crazy but it's all good stuff. I have learned a ton! I always known how many wonderful friends and family members we have but their love and help have put many !!!! at the end. I couldn't have done any of this without them. After the wedding I was very very tired! Mike and I took the opportunity to sneak away for the night to visit the coast at a bed and breakfast. We got off later then we had hoped so we missed the sunset on the beach. But it just mattered that we were together. We were sound asleep when the phone in the home rang about 1:30 am to which I said please don't let that be for us. It was! Alyse was having a kidney stone attack. But we were told to wait and not come home and they would see how things were going and keep us posted. So Mike would set his phone alarm and call ever hour or two. Kathy, Devin, Kristen and Lance took care of Alyse. We were determined to get some oysters so off to Panama City we went and we had a great time. The oysters were amazing as was the company. I love spending time with my one true love. I told Mike when I woke up that Saturday I'm not sure if I am tired or exhausted!

I did have a struggle when Kathy called me and told me Mom and Dad's house was up for sale. She went over and took some pictures. The house has changed and it made my heart so sad. Kind of like my home base was now gone as well as my parents. Even though they have been gone for years. Kathy told me she would go to the open house and feel the walls and take pictures for me but I am sure it just wont be the same. The house that built me has changed. I would still like to go visit at least one more time to the house at 16143 Camino Del Sol.

So here I sit today feeling so much better but still thinking about the old homestead. But all in all I am finally rested up and my legs have recovered from the standing and walking of the wedding and the drives all over Florida and Alabama. And I always realize that life keeps going on and that is a good thing.
